We’re delighted to share that Long Covid Kids and Friends has been awarded £5,000 from the St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation to support an important new project exploring the impact of Long Covid on children and young people in Charnwood, Leicestershire.

Supported by St Jame's Place Charitable Foundation

The project will be delivered in partnership with the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University, working with Professor Mark Faghy, Professor of Clinical Exercise Physiology, and Dr Paul Lester, Senior Research Associate in Public Health Research & Evaluation, alongside Dr Annette Durant, Population Health Lead at the Communities Food & Wellbeing Hub, and local schools.

Professor Mark Faghy said:

Loughborough University are delighted to be partnering with Long Covid Kids and the Communities Food and Wellbeing Hub on this important project funded by the St. James's Place Charitable Foundation. This funding will allow Loughborough University to leverage its expertise and local partnerships to kick start essential work in addressing the burden of Long Covid in children and young people.
We look forward to partnering with local families, educators and clinicians to coproduce recommendations that can be used by the wider Long Covid community in addressing this urgent unmet need".

Together, we will explore the prevalence and impact of Long Covid and associated symptoms among children and young people, with a particular focus on communities experiencing social and economic disadvantage.

More than 250 children, parents and educators will be invited to contribute through a survey, with further interviews and focus groups helping us understand the impact on children’s health, quality of life, education and participation in everyday activities.

Importantly, children and young people will help shape the project, ensuring their experiences and priorities inform the work throughout.

The learning will help build the evidence needed to inform future clinical and educational recommendations, with the ambition of developing approaches that can ultimately be used more widely across healthcare and education.

We’re incredibly grateful to the St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation for supporting this work and enabling us to build the evidence needed to better understand children’s experiences of Long Covid and help shape more effective responses across healthcare and education.

A spokesperson for St. James's Place Charitable Foundation said:
