Deacon used to be the fastest runner - Long Covid Kids Real Life Stories

“I miss my bouncy, energetic, loving boy.”

Deacon used to be the fastest runner in his year, but he’s not managed to do any sports in over a year now.

It all began with a positive PCR in January of 2021. However, what started with a fortnight of sickness, dizziness, and chest pain developed into lingering symptoms of Long Covid.

Rashes, muscle aches, brain fog, insomnia, and anxiety were just some of the ways he was affected. Not to mention the extreme fatigue which made it near-impossible to attend more than a single lesson per week. But whilst school has been supportive about the fog and fatigue, some teachers just didn’t understand what they couldn’t see.

Unfortunately for Deacon, the pressure of having to “get in'' is just as bad as the anxiety he feels - usually around how much he’s missing out on. And while the council has finally arranged home tutoring for two lessons a day, Deacon’s still fallen a year behind his classmates.

But although full recovery feels a long way away, things are moving in the right direction. Physiotherapy and acupuncture are helping with the aches and fatigue, whilst an occupational therapist is teaching Deacon to pace himself during the day and sleep a little more soundly at night.

So what does the future look like for Deacon? Well, he’d love nothing more than to play football and start going out with his mates again. Failing that, he’d just like to not feel so tired all the time.
