“I think Abigail feels like she will never get better.”
Unsurprising when she’s been suffering from COVID since 2021.
Perhaps even worse considering this 8-year-old girl has now lost the patience of her school. Initially showing concern, Abigail's teachers soon became dismissive. Without fully understanding the severity of her condition, they soon started to pressure her into doing sports and other activities.
What they didn’t realise is that fatigue, cold symptoms, and crippling abdominal problems make these things impossible to do.
Abigail wouldn’t skip school if she didn’t have to; she used to love to swim and take part in PE. Not to mention going to her friends' birthday parties at the weekend.
These days, she’s subdued, anxious, and miserable most of the time. Far from the fun-loving, energetic 9-year-old she used to be.
So when they suggest she “...should be getting better” or say: “It’s a mental health issue,” perhaps they’re right. After contracting COVID-19 and living with the physical symptoms for so long, how could it not affect her mentally as well as physically?
The reality of Long Covid is all too real for Abigail and her family. Every day’s a fight to plough through and stay positive.
