Resia Pretorius

Distinguished Professor, Research Scientist & Long Covid Expert

Professor Resia Pretorius (PhD) is a Distinguished Professor at Stellenbosch University (South Africa), Honorary Professor at the University of Liverpool (UK), and a founding director of Biocode Technologies, a Stellenbosch University start-up company.
Her pioneering research in coagulation system pathophysiology has transformed understanding of how inflammatory molecules interact with clotting proteins, platelets, erythrocytes, and endothelial cells. Since 2000, she has authored more than 320 peer-reviewed papers and filed multiple patents related to the early detection of inflammatory disease risk and the diagnosis of coagulation pathology in Long Covid and other inflammatory conditions.
Professor Pretorius is actively involved in global health initiatives, serving on the World Health Network (WHN) and as a scientific advisor to Phys2biomed in Italy and the Long Covid Foundation in Leeds, UK. She has also contributed to World Health Organization (WHO) panels in 2021, 2022, and 2024 to advance global understanding of post-Covid conditions.
Her research has been instrumental in identifying microclots and their implications for Long Covid pathology, including in children. As an advocate, she is dedicated to amplifying the voices of affected children and families, advising on research priorities, and bridging the gap between science, medicine, and lived experience to improve diagnosis and treatment.
