The government released a detailed comparison of children admitted to hospital between wave 1 (spring 2020) and wave 2 (winter 2021) on Friday.

Some things that stand out:

1. Large majority (80%) were admitted BECAUSE of COVID, and

2. Almost 60% of children had no underlying conditions.

Once again, we get more confirmation that children have COMMON SYMPTOMS that are NOT the ones government uses to prompt a test. Eg, vomiting, stomach ache, diarrhoea & fatigue & cold symptoms. The Government needs to update (and communicate) the symptom list.

Finally, kids needing hospital are much more likely to be non-white and much more likely to be from deprived communities.

High infections in kids do not affect communities the same - a lesson government still hasn't learned after year or doesn't care about.

If your child experiences any symptoms that indicate they are unwell, it COULD be COVID-19, and you should get them a test to help identify if it is a current Covid infection. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions page for more information.
